The Mountaineer .:. Commercial Lease Property Queenstown
A complex of buildings on Rees Street and bounded by both Beach and Shotover Streets have been known as The Mountaineer since 1885.
The Mountaineer building façades were designed by Mr Frederick W. Burwell, Architect, in 1884. Originally the site was named The Prince of Wales Hotel which was partly demolished and rebuilt in stone and concrete in 1885.
The original owners Mr John and Mrs Mary Malaghan operated The Prince of Wales Hotel with a relatively grand atmosphere until John Malaghan’s death in 1884. With the name change to The Mountaineer Hotel, came an appeal to a different clientele and certainly in the last half of the twentieth century it was a pub for the people.
The Mountaineer is currently listed in the Queenstown Lakes District Plan as a protected façade (No. 137 – Protected Feature Heritage, Mountaineer Hotel Façade, corner of Rees and Beach Streets, Queenstown), it is the intention of The Westwood Group to restore and enhance the historic façade and protect the architectural significance for future generations.
The Westwood Groups vision for the Mountaineer is to integrate all the existing buildings within the complex into one cohesive design concept that retails all the historic charm of the building but also delivers a new level of style and sophistication to what is becoming an important part of Queenstown’s retail precinct. A large part of this vision will be fulfilled by delivery of a superb new building designed by Walker Architects but equally important is the securing of the right mix of tenants who are committed to delivering the same high standards.
